Hey, Laura here! I thought I’d write a blog post explaining a bit about me, the creator of KINN and how the brand came about as a lot of people presume it’s a bunch of guys behind the brand!
I studied Fashion Buying at Manchester Metropolitan University UK, Fashion Theory & Jewellery Design at the New York Fashion institute. From here, I travelled the world then worked doing Ski seasons in France. I then decided to use my degree and follow my passion and then became a fashion buyer in London. In 2011, I took a career break & travelled to Australia. I landed in Perth in May, then travelled around WA for 6 months, staying in Exmouth for 3. If you haven’t been there, I highly recommend it! This is where I met my partner Dan, a music producer from Perth. I then decided Australia was the place for me and moved to Perth.
I quickly realised the fashion industry in Perth was not quite as vast and with as many job opportunities in Buying as I was used to in London and that Perth is actually pretty small! Especially when you only know three people! So, I started applying for Jobs as a Buyer over East, as I just couldn’t find anything in Perth. When I eventually got a job as head of men’s wear in Melbourne, I actually ended up turning it down. I thought I’d take a chance on my own dream of having my own label. Not sure if I was crazy or stupid but I said no thanks and stayed in Perth. In 2015 I finally decided to start the ball rolling with KINN, I saw a gap in the market for good quality staple pieces of men’s apparel. As a former men’s wear buyer in the UK I had clear vision of where I wanted to start but no idea how to, especially with no contacts in Perth, let alone Australia. So, I started from scratch.
To this day I still feel like we're fumbling away in the dark sometimes but we have come so far in 3 years when I actually think about it. Here at KINN we aren’t pretending to be anything that we are not, we are just trying to create great wardrobe staples for the everyday guy. We are constantly making mistakes but learning from them at the same time. Slowly but surely, we are growing our brand one step at time!
